Why Caregen Stock Fell 18%: FDA Safety Concern, No Filing

Seoul — Caregen closed down 18.25% at 27,100 won on Nov. 2. Protina fell 11.79% the same day. Caregen's drop followed press reports of an FDA safety concern, but no company filing confirms a problem. No reason for Protina's fall can be found.

The KOSPI rose 2.24% and the KOSDAQ rose 1.38% that day, so neither drop tracked the broad market. On Oct. 30 in New York, the Nasdaq fell 2.86% and the S&P 500 fell 1.82%.

Caregen: down 18%, and the only cause is a news report

Caregen recent price and volume

Korea Economic Daily reported that Caregen dropped early on Nov. 2 after an FDA safety concern about Coglutide became known. Seoul Economic Daily said the company recommends 12 weeks of use even though the FDA referred to use within 30 days. Both are press reports. The only DART filings in the past seven days are two notices that the stock futures hit price-limit expansion thresholds on the downside. There is no filing on a rights offering, earnings deterioration or litigation. There is also no filing in which the company responds to the FDA matter. The verdict is 'company problem confirmed', but the basis is press reports only.

The slide did not start today. The stock is down 57.9% since Aug. 4 and 61.3% below its three-month high close of 70,000 won. It fell 17.9% over five days. Earlier drops of 8.08% on Oct. 26 and 3.24% on Oct. 30 came before this one.

On how far it has fallen, the 14-day RSI is 23.9, a short-term oversold zone. The stock sits at the bottom (0%) of its 52-week range, 81.6% below its 52-week high and 64.6% below its 200-day average. Volume was 25.8 times normal. At the close, buy orders outstanding were 1,706 against 906 sell orders. These figures show the speed of the drop, not a signal of a rebound. Earnings strength and investor flow data were not available for this check.

Protina: down 11.8%, no reason visible

Protina recent price and volume

The only filing in the past seven days is an Oct. 6 investment-caution designation, which does not relate to today's drop. All news in the past three days dates from Oct. 29: patent entry in eight countries for the osteoarthritis candidate PRT-101, technology-transfer talks with two Japanese drugmakers, and a biomarker analysis contract with a U.S. drugmaker. None explains a decline. The stock rose four straight sessions from Oct. 26 to Oct. 29, reaching 53,900 won, so today's fall gave back part of that gain. There is no evidence that this is the cause.

Protina is up 107.8% since Aug. 4 and 11.6% below its three-month high close of 54,200 won. The five-day change is +0.2%. RSI is 54.4 and the price is 6.0% above its 20-day average, with no overheating signal. It sits at 33% of its 52-week range and 57.2% below its 52-week high. The stock has swung widely before, with drops of 16.7% on Oct. 7, 14.1% on Oct. 14 and 11.2% on Oct. 15. The verdict is 'reason not confirmed', with no basis.

Two things to check next. For Caregen, whether the company issues an official response or filing on the FDA concern. For Protina, whether new filings or investor flow data for the day appear. This data set has no investor-level flow for either stock, so who sold is unknown.
